Justice has been served by Etsy!

After so many people have suggested I reported the Dot Dot Shoppe to Etsy. And they take copyright issues very seriously. In less than 24h the shop owner left a comment on this blog saying she took the listing down (not out her free will of course, but because Etsy made her do so).

Correction
It was not Etsy that resulted in removing the listing. It must have been a fellow blog reader who was looking for a free pattern. Thank you whoever you are!

Here is her full comment:

Hello, I the owner of Dot Dot Shoppe who is being referred to here. I wish I would have been contacted so that I could have at least defended myself instead of getting a message accusing me of stealing.
I would like to point out that if I were going to steal, why would I leave evidence behind by posting a picture on Snip Hip Horray?
I am a small business owner and I very much like to give credit to fellow small business owner. I have used Brindle and Twig patterns many times and I always credit them. The first hat I made using Snip Hip Hooray pattern, I had to make up a lot of it as I went because the instructions weren't clear, but even still, I credited her when I posted on social media.
After I made it though it still just wasn't what I wanted it to be. I wanted something reversible, I wanted a band that could double as a headband, the measurements of the cap itself weren't what I needed, and several more things.
I searched and tried many patterns without finding what I needed so I made my own. I took what I had learned from everyone, and made it myself. I was so excited because I had never done that before.
The pattern that I took the most tips from on how to make a reversible hat was a completely different style of hat that I applied the same principles to this skull cap but even still, their pattern gave permission to sell.

The technique that I kept from Domestic Godess was how to make the ruffle.

Domestic Godess, I wish you would have just contacted me instead of accusing me of stealing and using my aunt. I included her story in my description because I wanted it to relate to how other chemo patients might feel.

My price isn't out of greed. The fabric i used was expensive.

If you would have contacted me I would have explained my reasoning and if you still felt like my product was too similar, I would have been more than willing to take it down, credit you or whatever.

I felt like it was totally different in that mine is a 3 in 1 cap. If you felt differently, I wish you would have contacted me instead of going straight to blasting me.
My main seller is my hammered out coins that I handstamp, I went to another local place and they too had something very similar, only their coins were flattened out smooth by a crank machine. Other than that, our product was the same, I didn't go and accuse them of taking my idea. They took something and made it their own.

Anyways, I took the listing down until hopefully you and I can straighten this out. I was going to send this in a personal email to you but couldn't find a contact button on your page.
If you would like to email me at dotdotshoppe@gmail.com you can, otherwise I will look for your response here.

I do apologize if you feel I have wronged you and I hope we can sort this out. For me it is just a cap and not worth making anyone angry. I personally felt that I made it my own but if you feel differently than I can respect that.

Now if she was a decent person she would make her "original" pattern and construction method available for free for everyone to make up for the fact that her actions caused me not to offer my pattern for free. She was even kind enough to leave an email for you if you wish to contact her directly dotdotshoppe@gmail.com .

Oh my goodness. You keep posting accusations. I have NEVER received any messages from Etsy telling me to remove the listing. I deactivated it myself (my own free will) this morning out of respect for this misunderstang, the only reason I knew about your previous blog most is because a woman sent me a message on Etsy last night shaming me.

Etsy themselves has never contacted me.

I gave you credit for the first hat I made on Instagram. The hat I was selling was my own because I wanted a 3 in 1 hat.

Justice was served because I respect your feelings not because I was made to by Etsy.

Domestic Godess said...

How generous of you!

Domestic Godess said...

I don't believe that it is a coincidence that I reported you to Etsy last night and you suddenly feel the need to take your listing down (after you sold one already).

Unknown said...

I sent you pictures showing that I told the woman I would take it down. And if you just reported it last night then it would take 24-72 hours to even process.

Domestic Godess said...

Yes you are correct, Etsy just denied my claim. But I am glad that someone who was looking for free chemo patterns brought it to your attention that what you were doing was not right.

I feel like my 3in1 hat is different and not like yours. I do not feel that I did anything wrong is selling the 3in1 hat. The hat I used with your pattern, I gave away.

I only wish that you would have been the one to bring your feelings to my attention instead of all this hate being stirred up.

So many people kept asking for my patterns daily , It was taking too much time to keep responding to their requests. I felt I owed them an explanation why there were not available anymore. I did not stir up hate I just explained what happened. I was simply disappointed about what had happened. It's not my fault that you are a stay at home mom and need to make money, that is not an excuse. It's not my fault that you have 4 children. I had cancer and I am no longer able to have children. It's great that you are planning an cancer headcovering sewing event at your church. I am not a confrontational person, it actually took a lot for me to even post the whole thing. In the conversation that you had with another person on Etsy who brought this whole thing to your attention , you called her rude and unprofessional. Would you have called me names to even if I would have contacted you first? Yes ,cancer has made me a shallower person. I can't even believe how much time and effort I have spent on dealing with this whole thing.

Unknown said...

Well you confronted the situation...but you didn't confront me, the person you're angry with. Your post did stir up hate and your continual posts after are hateful. If I had been taking credit for your work and making profit that's one thing, but I made a 3in1 hat that is different from yours. That is the one I sold.
I don't prowl around taking other people's work just so I can help my family.
If you would have contacted me with how you felt, I would not have called you rude and unprofessional. I told this woman she was rude and unprofessional because she messaged me accusing me.
Your comments have been hateful and the apparent comments you say other people made were hateful. Therefor, hate was stirred up.

Why not give me the chance first to explain myself and even give me the chance to take down the listing out of respect for your feelings before you go blasting me and my business and report me to Etsy?

I feel my hat is different but I do not think it's worth all of this if you felt differently. I would have been more than willing to take it down before all of this got started.

And on a completely separate note. I am truly sorry for everything cancer robbed you of. Happiness, joy, time, love, health, self worth. It's truly a terrible disease and comes out of nowhere leaving its victims blind sided. I hope that you are able to, in the future, rediscover yourself and find some form of joy again. And most of all, may the cancer die and never return.

Domestic Godess said...

What can I say, I am just such a hateful person, doing horrible hateful things. I was giving away my patterns for free for 2 years because I am such a hateful person, literally spewing hatred out of every orifice of my body. I had no issues with my patterns until you came along, I barely had any comments. The most feedback and comments I have ever gotten was after I explained why my patterns are no longer free.
Why was I supposed to contact you or confront you?

Domestic Godess said...

PS lots of buyers who are having to pay for my patterns now keep commenting that they will only use the pattern for personal use. Which leads me to believe they agree that what you did was morally wrong.

Domestic Godess said...

So how is a person who is inept to follow my instructions able to create her own pattern? Or why did she need a pattern in the first place?

Unknown said...

Ok. Well I've tried explaining my side that I feel my 3in1 hat is different and obviously Etsy feels the same since they denied your claim. I apologized multiple times. And I even took the listing down out of respect for your feelings. I even bought your pattern yesterday for the first hat I made and gave away to my aunt.
You clearly want to stay mad and are really just being a bully at this point with your continual posts.
I highly doubt that my church gave you permission to advertise an event that they aren't even advertising yet. Putting their address wit out permission was crossing the line.
You pointing out that you have never received any comments until you started all this drama makes me wonder if all of your posts exposing my name and business without permission is all in attempt to generate clicks and comments for your blog.

I am asking that you take down these posts or at the very least remove my name. I have already made my FB profile private after you told me people trolled my page only to give you false information.
Please take down entirely, the post about my church as I know you were not given permission to do that.
This whole thing has just turned into a disturbing and unprofessional mess on a sewing blog no less.
If you won't take it down and remove my name then I will report your posts to Blogger.

Unknown said...

^^^the reason I have grounds for reporting you is you gave out a non-profit religious organization address without permission. You gave out my personal name multiple times without permission. And you are violating Bloggers terms of agreement by harassing/bullying. You also posted personal messages via screenshots without permission. I have been in contact with Blogger and they requested that I attempt to ask you first to remove the content.

Domestic Godess said...

Bite me!

Unknown said...

So are you willing to remove the posts or not?

Domestic Godess said...

You are the one who introduced yourself, why would I remove your comment that you left on my blog? Am I not allowed to express my own opinions on my own blog? If I remember correctly I did not contact you,you are the one who seeked ME out.

Domestic Godess said...

So you do represent the Christ Family Church of Clearview after all?

Unknown said...

Your first post from January has you making false claims that I am selling hats made with your pattern. You posted my shop. You introduced me. I came to defend myself before you sent more trolls after me. And now you have made several more posts that I really just don't know the purpose of. I have stolen nothing from you. I GAVE AWAY the hat I made with your pattern. And what do you mean, "after all". Clearly it's my church.
I'm done with this though. I've never experienced someone with such disregard to work things out in a civilized way. I take that back, I have never experienced an adult with such disregard to work things out.
You clearly feel you are acting justifiably so there is nothing I can do to change that. I've done everything I can to defend myself while treating you with respect.
I did not steal your pattern. I did not sell or profit from your pattern.
I cannot believe all of this was started over a pattern and over false claims at that.

And let's be real, even I had used your pattern to sell hats WHICH I DID NOT, you had nothing on your tutorial saying "for personal use only. Not to be used to sell". So for all you know, I could have been making an honest mistake not knowing using your pattern would inflict such wrath. But I didn't use your pattern to sell hats.

Domestic Godess said...

I am still patiently waiting to see your original pattern and construction methods and you offering your pattern for free.

Unknown said...

Wow.... Bully much? Domestic Goddess you handled this in a very very poor manner.

Unknown said...

Yeah I do see a lot of bullying on your part Domestic Goddess.. I don't know either one of you but it seems that this Brittney was just trying to explain her side and you said some very cruel things to her. I went and looked at both products and while they do look similar, yours is not reversible nor does it turn into other types of hats and headbands like hers does. To me this says that she is not using your pattern to create what she is selling because the products are two very different things...This is not how a small business owner should act in front of potential customers. I would suggest removing all of this before more people see how you responded in the situation. I know I personally would not want to buy anything from your shop for the sheer fact that I would be afraid of how you would act towards me if I said anything negative or even asked a question. This has been a huge mess on your part for letting it go this far. I hope you will see reason and take this stuff down... - From a once, but no longer, potential customer

Domestic Godess said...

I am not a SMALL BUSINESS OWNER!!!!! She says she is running a small business. I am MERELY RUNNING A SEWING BLOG that used to give away FREE patterns to be used by women going through chemo. It breaks my heart that you are also going through cancer and were looking to purchase hats to cover your bald head. I do not PROFIT from my sales but donate hats and money to a local hospital's cancer research program. I have been able to raise almost $1000. I hope the cancer research that my hard work is supporting will benefit you on your cancer journey as well. I wish you full recovery!

Unknown said...

I personally do not have cancer, but was looking for a special something for a family member of mine dealing with cancer who is also taking care of her newborn. She refused to go through chemo while she was pregnant because she didn't want to abort her baby. She almost died but is thankfully getting better now. I posted this in saying that before I saw all this mess, I was interested in your stuff, but now I am no longer. I'm sorry you are having these issues and wish you the best of luck with your future customers/ patrons...

Domestic Godess said...

So sorry about your family member. I know what she is going through, I too had to care for my baby while I was going through treatment. It was my perception however that pregnant women can have chemo, there are several women with breast cancer out there who did not have to abort their babies and gave birth to perfectly healthy babies at or near term after chemo.

Unknown said...

And when I say customer, I meant for the price you charge for your patrern. The only reason I even stumbled on all this was because I was referred by someone else about your free patterns and when I got here they were being sold. I have read through all of your blogs on the situation and all of the comments, so no need to reiterate why you are now charging for them..So that is why I was saying that I was a "potential customer" because you are now selling a product. Again, good luck and I hope this mess doesn't deter others away from what you are doing. You have personally lost my business because of the cruelty that is in this blog. I hope you continue to do well with your items.

Domestic Godess said...

And again I hope the money I raise for cancer research will possibly help your family member.

Unknown said...

It was very very early in her pregnancy that she found out about the cancer. It is a very aggressive form that required her to do both chemo and radiation which the doctors told her would have aborted her baby. She chose the o do neither until the baby was born to save her life.

Domestic Godess said...

Again I do not sell the patterns, I do not profit from them. If you would have read the listing you would have seen that all proceeds after Etsy fees will go for cancer related causes. However I can email you both the patterns for free because you too were dooped out of a free pattern by certain unnamed person. She did not let me down, she let down people like you who are trying to help a loved one or themselves during chemo.

Domestic Godess said...

I know radiation very well. I had to put my baby down for a nap to run to the city for less than 15min radiation for 28 days. It's great that she has been able to beat such an agressive form of cancer.

Unknown said...

No thank you. I really don't like the cruelty on this site towards people and even towards me not even 30 minutes ago on another post. I wish you luck.

Domestic Godess said...

You are right it is truly cruel towards women going through chemo that I can't offer patterns for free anymore.

Unknown said...

That's not really what I meant when I said cruelty, but ok. I was more talking about the exchanges between people.

Unknown said...

It is a crying shame the amount of nonsense and bullying on Etsy forums. Sellers going after one another over pennies. Must me nice to have such a fantasy life that you have time to make mountains out of mole hills. Then there are those who want to talk about how bad they've had it in life while others get to be stay at home moms. Personally I haven't met a single person who has not had heartache and challenges in life, regardless of there vocation. Time all women grow up and support one another. There are bigger fish to fry in this world!
