Part 1 of No Tie Chemo Scarf
Please use these alternative patterns http://snipriphooray.blogspot.com/2018/02/substitute-patterns-for-pre-tied.html
Tutorial for No Tie chemo Scarf.
You may read here why the patterns are no longer free/available
http://snipriphooray.blogspot.com/2017/01/good-deeds-will-not-go-unpunished.html
The pattern for personal use or for charitable purposes, you may not sell the pattern or items made from it.
You will need:
1/2 yard (18 inches) medium to lightweight knit fabric at least 46" wide
(If you are making more than one scarf then you can nestle the pattern pieces and you will need less fabric per scarf)
7'' of 1/2 inch wide elastic
thread
hand sewing needle
sewing machine
serger (optional)
mad skills (only kidding)
Print out all the pattern pieces. Set your printer to "no-scaling". Use the " 2" test square" to make sure you pattern printed out correctly.
Cut out pattern pieces and tape them together lining up the letters and diamonds.
Place pattern on fold of fabric.
Cut out leaving the shaded triangle.
Finish the straight edge by serging or use zig-zag or other stitch on your regular machine. Finishing the raw edge is not mandatory since most knits will not fray.
Fold 1'' hem to the wrong side of your fabric, press and stitch. You can use the stretch stitch, zig-zag, double needle - anything that will take a little bit of stretch.
Trim off the little shaded triangle area from the pattern. You can do that by placing a ruler on the scarf tail and marking a line on the hem. Or you can cut the triangle out from the pattern, fold up the hem on the pattern and place the pattern on your fabric and marking the line.
Thank you so much for posting this pattern! A friend found out last week that she would be undergoing chemo for breast cancer. This is precisely the style pattern that I have been scouring the web for. Thank you, Thank you for your sharing your creativity. I do hope that those who use your pattern will do so with the same intention that it has been shared.
ReplyDeleteI just made this in cotton voile. Instead of hemming, I put the hemline on the fold and cut a double layer. I sewed around the open edges, left a gap for turning, I fused a layer of fleece about 4" wide across the front, then tuned the piece and edged stitched the whole thing. I used bias tape along the gathering line to make a casing for the elastic. Worked like a charm; no narrow hems and the elastic is covered. Going to try one out of Jeremy now!

ReplyDeleteYour fabric choice and construction sounds great. I have been thinking about trying to make some out on non-knit too, but never got around to try it out. Cotton voile sounds very comfy. My sister recommended making a casing for the elastic as well, but I was worried it would add too much bulk and would not gather as tight. It is great to hear about different ways to tackle the pattern. I am very interested to try to make some from woven fabric now as well. Thanks for taking the time to describe a great construction method!
DeleteHi. My mom found this post and would love to be able to make this scarf both for a specific individual and for donating to hospitals, but we can't quite figure out the pictures to pattern without measurements. I noticed that you have the hat for sale in your etsy shop. Would you be able to put this pattern fro sale on etsy so we can buy it there? Or would you possibly be willing to email it to us (her)? I can guarantee that it will only be used for charitable purposes, nothing commercial!
ReplyDeleteEmail me at skipphut@frontiernet.net and I'll email it to you.

ReplyDeleteHi, I'm trying to print this out but no matter what setting I print on i get a 3 inch square. I'm not new to printing patterns but this one is giving me a hard time! Please let me know if I'm missing something :)
ReplyDeleteIn your printer section select no scaling and make sure fit to page is not selected. Let me know if this works.

ReplyDeleteChelley - yes the area with the hem goes around the head and the tails are simply gathered towards the back. Good afternoon, I'm sad to see that this pattern is unavailable to download or purchase. If it is still available, may I please have a copy? I am also willing to pay whatever the cost. In the last two years I have had five friends that have had some type of cancer and had to have chemo and/or radiation. Sadly, one has passed away.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much.
Hello i was wondering if i could get this pattern, i'm doing this for a sewing class in highschool and my mom recently had lost her hair and i want to make something special for her.
ReplyDeleteI decided that I'd like to sew some chemo scarves, hats for people going through cancer treatment as a pay it forward for the great medical care a member of my family received.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking that I could donate them to our local cancer ward at our local hospital, to help brighten the lives of women going through cancer treatment in our area.
After searching a long time, I found one beautiful pattern in Finnish and your site.
I then saw the saga of the 'stolen' pattern.
I must say it is annoying and sad to think that someone would choose to profit from your work to help others, but I can't help thinking that your reaction to take down the pattern actually hurts the people you were initially wanting to help.
The person who took the pattern to profit, if they have indeed done the wrong thing has to live with the consequences of their actions, what ever they may be.
Meanwhile you have no control over their actions and they still have the pattern, while many of us who want to help others using your kindness and creativity now miss out as do the potential recipients of the hats made.
It seems your actions hurt the wrong people, while the person who betrayed you is not affected. Don't let one bad apple ruin everyone else's good intentions.
Well said, Carol. I too am going to sew chemo hats for our cancer center, I really would love to have this pattern. How anyone could want to profit from cancer patients has to be a very sad person. I hope the full pattern and instructions will be posted soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you in advance....
Hello Domestic Goddess, that is the prettiest scarf I've ever seen. My friend was diagnosed with breast cancer and has had the lump removed, and begun her chemo this week. I would love to gift her some pretty scarf like caps like this. May I please request information to buy a copy of your pattern? Hubby and I are going fabric shopping as she asked me if I would make her some custom made picc sleeve covers. Upon looking up those patterns, I found your blog and fell in love with your cap pattern. I am sorry to hear about your experience with someone stealing your pattern. I promise to make these solely for my friend as she goes through this rough period. Please let me know how to buy this pattern as soon as you can before her hair begins to thin. I love her so much I want to help take care of her.
