Plagiarism

Please use alternative patterns listed here http://snipriphooray.blogspot.com/2017/09/substitute-patterns.html

pla·gia·rism
ˈplājəˌrizəm/
noun
  1. the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.
    synonyms:copying, infringement of copyright, piracytheft, stealing;
    informalcribbing
    "accusations of plagiarism"

My son is still taught in school that plagiarism is not nice or acceptable behavior.

What is your opinion? Let me know in the comments.

Have we really come this far that plagiarism is now called creativity???
Is plagiarism now an acceptable behavior?
Are "work at home moms" somehow immune to plagiarism and in their case is it called creativity?
Is plagiarism called "creativity" when someone is trying to feed their family?
Is it OK to plagiarize another work at home mom?
Is it acceptable to profit from plagiarism?
Do you support "work at home moms" who plagiarize?
Is it called slander and bullying if someone calls someone out on plagiarism?
Is it OK to plagiarize something if you paid for the item?

Plagiarism is NOT an acceptable behavior. As a member of the DIY community, I totally understand how you feel. I built a banquette in my dining room, posted general directions online, shared it with several other women builders. Was told "Oh that's cute but so outdated" and they would not share the post. Within a year at least two of them had built banquettes in their homes almost identical to mine. I brushed it off. Then, I built loft beds for my kids, shared the plans with some of the same women builders. I got brushed off again, "oh that's cute but not for kids". And they wouldn't share the post. I'm talking about major well-known women DIY builder bloggers, sponsored by Lowes and tool companies. Again, within six months of me sharing my loft bed plans, one of them built loft beds using my plans and passed them off as her own. When I brought it to her attention, her answer was "Oh I changed the theme, so it's totally different." I stopped sharing anything in the DIY community. So I HATE when people don't give credit where credit is due. Which leads to how I found you. I'm now taking chemo, and I can't find chemo caps I like, until I found your designs on Pinterest. I fell in love with them, saw the pattern was free and found the horrors you went through. I'm so sorry that you went through all that. I would love the pattern for the no tie cap, my email address is

I agree plagiarism is not acceptable behavior. No one should be able to profit from someone else's hard work and creativity. If someone is doing that, they should be called on it. Unfortunately, many patterns crafters share on the internet are not patented, so it is difficult to do anything legally about it. This is why I don't usually share original designs on open sites. I have a dear friend who has lost all her hair due to chemo therapy and I was just looking for a pattern to make her a couple of hats. But I understand your issues totally and it should be your decision if you want to share. If you chose to do so, my email is Thank you.

Unfortunately too many people today feel entitled. If it's on the internet they want free access to do as they please. I'm sorry this happened to you. Those who copy usually lack the imagination and gumption to make their own designs. They then feel it's okay to copy others, make minimal changes and call it their own. What a shame.

  13. I'm so sorry this happened to you. This is a labor of love, not a competition. People should not profit from your free patterns. It is NEVER ok to plagiarize, ever, no excuses. How hard could it be to give credit where credit is due! Stay at home or not, nothing gives anyone the right to plagiarize someone else's creations and hard work. Thanks for what you do. I'd love to buy the patterns...

I own an etsy shop as well and have come across this problem too many times. Most recently, I've found my exact clothing items on a Chinese site that sells them for 1/10th of the price. Its disheartening but I get comfort in the fact that there are still moms and others that do believe in small businesses and will support them no matter what the cost. I'd love a copy of this pattern to make some scarves for my mom who has recently been diagnosed. My email is

  28. A very good friend hasn't had cancer but has recently had a HUGE cyst removed from the right side of her brain. She had her whole head shaved, rather than leave it up to the surgeons to "do their thing". She has a very large scar on her head and needs to wear scarves until her hair grows out. I've made her a "chemo cap" and giver her scarves but want to make something very simple for her to use to help her out.

Plagiarism is not an acceptable practice for anyone. A lot of time goes into the creator's work. Whether you are a small home based business or a big business if the idea and creation is your's than nobody has the right to claim it as their own. And no one should be bullying someone else without having all the facts. Well no one should bully period. I love these hat patterns you have created and would love to receive the no tie chemo scarf pattern. I have a friend who I am bringing to her chemo treatments and we both sew and knot. She just had her second treatment and we were able to bring in three sewn hats and 2 knitted hats. One of each went to another patient as soon as we gave them to one of the nurses in the infusion. It made my friend so happy to be able to help others. I love that your hats are 'dressy' and would love to be able to make some for others. We have a long way to catch up with you :)

Plagiarism is as wrong as shop lifting or any other crime. We need to teach our children this. Someone is hardworking and making their wages honestly while someone else is being dishonest and stealing their ideas to make some cash. Wrong wrong wrong! I'm in a different state visiting family and I'm seeing how dishonest people are. A hard working individual goes to work for the day and comes out only to find the chain his bike was locked up with has been cut and his bike stolen by someone. People need to go make an honest living and quit talking others ideas or belongings. My email is . I'd love to try the hat pattern for my granddaughter who has cancer.

It is not bullying to call someone out for plagiarism. I am a middle school technology teacher. To teach this I give every single student a bank book with $5 in school money that is spendable at the school store. They cannot open the pouch to access the money only I can. I take up the pouch at the end of class and redistribute the next day. As time passes I place more dollars in some of their envelopes. When they notice, they scream bloody murder that they have been robbed because the didn't earn more. I give them time to be indignant and them tell them to pull a scenario from the jar. The jar contains about 200 ways their inventions could have been plagiarized. Then they begin to realize how they steal from the people who took the time to create the things that others need. I need the patterns for myself and do not intend to profit from them or keep you from profiting in anyway. Please send it to and then delete my email address. Thank you

Plagiarism is definitely not acceptable. It's a principle that should be taught in schools starting in middle school, high school as well as college, with Discussion and examples of what plagiarism consists of. Perhaps then, it will be brought to an end. Wishful thinking? Hope not. We need to appreciate that when others share their creativity with us to appreciate it. It's a part of life. We love Art, music, books, movies, dances etc. and credit should be given only to that one or ones who created it. I would love to receive YOUR pattern as my daughter has been diagnosed
With triple negative cancer, most aggressive type. I hope to see a big smile on her face By making the hat and maybe a skirt to match.
Thank you for sharing your creativity with all of us who have responded. There are many of us who understand plagiarism.

It's very unfortunate that the means of sharing some really great ideas is also the means of those ideas being used in ways that they should not be.

I came in search of a pattern to use for my roommate who is going through chemo now. All of the sites I have found pointed me to this blog. We should be thanking those who have the creative mind plus the determination to see the project through to fruition. It is the lazy and unethical who steal someone else's work and call it their own. That's not creating your own recipe. If I made a chemo hat or scar from a pattern, I wouldn't say it that I created pattern, just that I sewed it. I'd love a pattern for my friend's mother.

Plagerism has become quite an easy thing to do these days. Easy does not make something right. Taking things that don't belong to you and making a profit hurts society. It demeans the person and the person who created the item. I am so sorry this happened to you. I would be devastatingly upset. I will not be making this to sell. Thank you for creatively finding a way to share your pattern. This will bless my loved ones.

Are you serious? Did someone take your pattern and call it their own? That is wrong on so many levels! The internet makes it too easy to take people's things and they think that because it's on the internet that it's free for the taking. You see this issue with photos all the time. It's sad that people don't understand that you can't do that. I'm glad you called the person out and I seriously hope that they feel bad about it. I would love to make a couple of your scarves and hat for two friends who are going through treatments. My email address is

  115. Good afternoon, plagiarism is so not acceptable. but unfortunaltely some people who are small minded and less creative find that is the only way they can accomplish things for themself. how sad is that...Stealing from someone else for your own glory. I wouldn't expend any more of your good energy on this woman. I have been searching for days for a hat pattern for my girlfried. she has such a small head and after radiation now has very little hair. I had been looking for something a little jazzy that could lift her spirits. I was going to make her one for every day. she has just been told she has 8 - 12 months. If you would like to share, I would truly appreciate.

  117. Donna D, my pattern is not great for a small head. But the commercial patterns usually have multiple sizes and they would work better for you http://snipriphooray.blogspot.com/2017/09/substitute-patterns.html then just add a smaller headband and flower.

  127. Making a profit off from someone else's effort and kindness is never acceptable. I have lost all my hair from chemo and the other hats I am using are not warm enough now that it is getting colder. I would really appreciate the pattern and I also have a friend that I would make one for Thank you so much for your generosity.

Plagirism is not acceptable. I would like your pattern to make hats to donate to my local oncologists office. I am making simple hats for the men but would like something a little fancier for women.
My oldest brother is battling pancreatic cancer right now. This is his second battle. He was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin s Lymphoma 5 years ago. I would like to give back. I plan on involving my 3 daughters in this project. If you are willing to share the pattern with me I would appreciate it. You can send it to

My daughter-in-law had a double mastectomy, and has been told she will also need to start chemo and radiation. My heart is breaking for her as she is only 39 years old with two children. She is a beautiful person inside and out. I would love to make her some of your beautiful hats to lift her spirits. Please be assured I would never profit from someone else's generosity and would be happy to pay for the pattern if I knew where to send the money. Thank you in advance. My email is

  139. I am a long-time quilter who has spent decades trying to explain why you shouldn't photocopy patterns and books to share with friends. I totally get why you were upset when someone plagerized your work.

Sent you a message via Etsy then went further into the comments to see the instructions for requesting your chemo hat pattern (for my personal use). Would love to have it as I am just starting my cancer journey. My email address is srink100@yahoo.com. I am happy to purchase the pattern via my Etsy account. Thank you in advance

  142. It’s so disheartening to read that someone else is trying to profit from your hard work and good deeds. Plagiarism is wrong and should be called out wherever it happens. I have been sewing for myself and family for a couple of years and as my mum is now fighting her third different cancer in 12 years, I would dearly love to make her some stylish head coverings if you’re willing to share your patterns. I looked at the beautiful items in your Etsy store but they don’t ship to and if prefer to choose my mums favourite colours if possible. Thank you. My email is: catmadjulie@gmail.com

  148. Hello. I don't know what the status is or if this pattern is even still available. My mother was just diagnosed with breast cancer and starts chemo Christmas eve. Shes super self concious of losing her hair and I thought these caps were very cute with the flower embellishment. I have no idea if I have the sewing skills but I would like to try. No selling or anything, not like I would have the time anyway. I just want to make her some and donate a few to the hostipal "wig closet". My email is graciesperks@hotmail.com. I would even consider purchasing if need be. Thank you for your consideration.

Thank you for your work with the tutorial and pattern!

It's not hairloss caused by chemotherapy its hairloss caused by a genetic autoimmune disorder. I've had it for 27yrs now. It's so bad these days I shave my head. All I'd like is to be able to wear a nice head cover on cold days or when going out to visit others. Thank you.
