Hats and scarves galore

I changed up some of these chemo hats by just adding a flower pin. I used satin, chiffon and tulle for the flowers.I line the chemo hats in rayon, great for hot flashes.

Ruffle fabric scarf

This must be my favorite one so far. I made it for a friend who requested orange. I was surprised how gorgeous it turned out. You need to hand baste the edges before doing the rolled edge on the serger or he ruffles will be all over the place and will not get caught in the stitches. But the extra step is worthwhile.

Cut the pattern out and tape pieces together. Cut the fabric and lining on the fold. For lining I try to use a cotton blend knit, rayon knit or a performance fabric that will wick away moisture.

Stitch the seams marked with red.

Fold the hat in half so the rest of the seams meet.

Pin the top and stitch the seam.

 Sew the lining the same way just leave an opening on the long seam for turning.

 Place the lining inside the main fabric right sides together and match the long seam.

 I like to pin it before I sew to make sure it comes out even.

Stitch the lining and main fabric together.

 Find the opening in the lining and turn the hat right side out.

 Tuck the lining inside the hat and pin the edge so that 1/4 '' of main fabric is inside the hat. This is to make sure the lining does not peek out from the hat edge.

 Top stitch either with a double needle or a stretch stitch about 1'' from the edge.

Stitch the lining to the main  fabric at the crown with one or two stitches.

Handstitch the opening used for turning shut.

Press the top stitching and the hat hem.

To make the headband cut a rectangle 20 1/4'' x 5''. If your fabric allows wider than 5'' is better.

Pin the band right sides together and stitch.

Use the rolled hem setting on a serger to finish the raw edges. If you stretch the edge while serging then you'll get a curly lettuce edge.

Run a gathering stitch on the seam.

Gather tightly and knot the thread.

How to make fabric flowers

Cut strip or strips about 1 1/2 inches wide, total length of strips should be 30 inches or more. Any direction is fine, if cut diagonally the edge will be more curly. Use the rolled hem setting on a serger and serge one edge. Cut a felt circle about 1 3/4 to 2 inches in diameter.

 If using multiple strips lay the strips out ready to be gathered overlapping the ends a bit.

Gather using a small hand stitch or gather by machine.

The fullness of the flower is determined by how tightly you gather. 

Handstitch the strip to the felt circle starting at the outer edge and working towards the center in a spiral. You can do this by machine as well.

It helps to have the end tightly gathered for the center. If the center is messy then you can add something larger for the center like little bit of tulle or larger beads and decorations.

I missed an original milestone I had set for myself. I wanted to make and donate 100 headcoverings  with my free chemo scarf pattern and see if I would want to continue from there. I missed the 100 scarf and hat mark and I still have a bunch of material left. I guess I must have hoarding tendencies when it comes to fabric and I will always find an excuse to purchase more. In the last batch of pre tied chemo scarves and hats I got really bored while sewing with solids. The hats were a bit more fun but I am still not quite happy how they are turning out.
